What to wear for your Headshots
What to wear for your headshots... I'm asked this a lot. Thought it'd make a great blog post. Truth be told, I'm not the type of guy that gives much thought to clothing. I never forget a face but ask me what someone wore... clueless. That is until I started focusing on headshot photography. So I'm writing a very brief post with some of my favorite images where people wore the right thing, in my opinion. To me this is nearly a perfect headshot. Nothing I do is perfect but I love her expression and what she's wearing. Simple clean lines. Until I started taking pictures of business people of all ages I didn't realize the importance of business clothing. The reason it is the way it is, is because of the vertical and diagonal lines produced. The expression, "You can't be too rich or too skinny." comes to mind. These vertical and diagonal lines help most everyone out. They do this for all kinds of reasons.

I could go on and on about how and why these lines help people. Then you could email me shots and that break all those rules. But I guarantee you that if you are Angelina Jolie or Margot Robbie, or Clive Owen, it doesn't much matter what you wear. I'm talking about the rest of us. I'm talking about the fractions of a second you get to impress on LinkedIn or the company website.
So don't think about what someone told you, you like nice in. I'm sure you looked great when they said that but unless it was for a business portrait setting, rule it out for our purposes here. It's not the Christmas party or some other function. You don't want the clothes to be a distraction. So it's not the outfits that people comment on that work well for precisely that reason. A headshot is about your punim not your clothes. Yiddish aside, you want to present the best version of your face you can. The collar slims most people down and creates "leading lines" back up to your face to direct the eye.
So in brief, this is always my recommendation. Here's some other things in a gallery that I think work well to. I think you'll see the premise is the same in all the images.
