There are different types of headshots needed for acting. If you are just starting out and you are not working with an agency I’d use your session to get a few nice tight headshots, and a waist up shot. Needs vary. Much depends on what type of work you want to do and how experienced you are. Body shots are a must if you think your body will get you work. “The well muscled tough guy” or “bombshell”, or you have a lot of ink on your arms and upper body, having a couple of shots to show these attributes are helpful. Remember that Atlanta is primarily casting extra and featured extra roles. There are studios casting larger roles out of Atlanta and hopefully that trend will continue.

The basic types of acting headshots are Theatrical, and Commercial. Theatrical are meant to help you find work in TV shows, films and plays. You want to show some personality. You want to show a bit of emotion. Commercial headshots are to place you in advertising where you appeal to a certain type of demographic. You’re using your persona to sell a certain type of product.

As the Atlanta acting market continues to grow more actors come to me with specific requests from agents. I’m happy to accommodate you as much as I can.

Professional hair and make-up. I highly recommend this for women. I have a few names that I recommend. I would not use a friend because they’re good at make-up. I’d use a professional who does it full-time.

Light retouching only on acting headshots. You want to appear your best, but you want to be you. I don’t do extensive retouching on acting headshots.

Acting Headshot FAQs

What is the difference between Theatrical and Commercial headshots? The basic types of acting headshots are Theatrical and Commercial. Theatrical headshots are meant to help you find work in TV shows, films, and plays—you want to show some raw personality and emotion. Commercial headshots, on the other hand, are designed to place you in advertising where you appeal to a specific, usually warmer, demographic.

What type of headshots do I need if I am just starting out? Needs vary depending on the work you want to do, but if you are just starting out and not yet working with an agency, I recommend using your session to get a few nice, tight headshots and at least one waist-up shot for versatility.

Should I get full body shots for my portfolio? Body shots are a must if you think your physical build will get you work. Because Atlanta casts a lot of extra and featured extra roles, if you fit a specific type (like the "well-muscled tough guy") or have a lot of ink on your arms and upper body, having a couple of shots to show those attributes is incredibly helpful.

Do you recommend professional hair and makeup? Yes, I highly recommend professional hair and makeup, especially for women. I strongly advise against just using a friend who is "good at makeup." You should use a full-time professional who understands studio lighting. If you need someone, I have a few great local names I can recommend!

How much retouching is done on an acting headshot? Unlike corporate portraits, we use light retouching only on acting headshots. Casting directors need to know exactly who is walking through the door. You want to appear your absolute best, but you still want to look exactly like you.
